Homeless in H&FBy Ricki Lake

It’s Christmas and the snow is falling. As we sit round the table and tuck into our Christmas dinner, our family is around us and warmth and joy is spread. But there are many that are not so lucky: the people on their friends’ sofa; the families staying in the bed and breakfast; the people on the street.

Many charities do outstanding work and the people who voulnteer are selfless. I stayed in a homeless hostel when I was in my teens, after running away from home. The streets of London are scary. You have to learn fast and be on your guard at all times.

If it weren’t for them, I would be still on the streets and still on drugs. There are still many others in a similar position. The charities are overstrecthed and undermanned and the people who attend them are freezeing. In 2010, that hell cannot be right: surely we can do better than this.

So at this time of year we should support Shelter and CentrePoint and all the voulnteers for the vaualbe and life changing work they do. We must not turn the other cheek.

Please consider making a donation.

North-South Divide Widens – is it time for a North of England Assembly?

A report published this week by the Local Data Company on the number of empty shops on our high streets highlights further the North-South divide, as well the dire economic situation many small and medium sized businesses are in. The highest number of shuttered shops was counted in Stockport where more than 30% are now empty, according to the study of 700 British town centres. The shopping parades of the South and West fared best with Taunton, Salisbury and St [...]

Local government finance – not sexy, but important

Local government finance is not the sexiest subject in the world, nor will it get many frontpage headlines. It’s not just the pace and scale of the coalition’s cuts which is hitting local government hard. Uncertainty created by a raft of other council finance proposals is causing real difficulty for town halls across the country. The cuts are savage and deliberately front-loaded, hitting local government disproportionately. Councils with higher levels of need are taking bigger hits, and as town halls [...]

Ashcroft Warned the Tories About the Health Bill a Year Ago

Over the last 12 months Michael Ashcroft has been conducting a range of focus groups and polling on how the Conservative Party can build a majority in a 2015 general election. They should be required reading for all involved in understanding public opinion and the electoral terrain. His ‘Wake Up and Smell The Coffee’ study had a significant albeit delayed impact on his party encouraging it to modernise, reposition itself and neutralise a number of ‘toxic’ issues for the party. [...]

Ed Miliband should campaign for François Hollande

The Presidential election in France to be held on 22 April with a further round on 5 May, if necessary, matters hugely to the rest of Europe. Were Francois Hollande to win, there would be one significant voice at the top table in Europe opposed to the current centre-right imposition of continent-wide austerity as the sole solution to the economic crisis. France would provide an alternative policy, and a humane one to boot, which is lacking at present. Chancellor Merkel [...]

Cameron’s cleaner plan leaves out the 99%

Poor Dave. Everything’s going wrong and he just doesn’t have a clue what to do, does he? He’s sitting on an economic mess that is getting worse by the day. None of the plans seem to be quite working as they’d hoped. Incredibly, Gideon’s made-up economic model “Expansionary Fiscal Contraction” (We’ll call it “Cutting for Growth” shall we?) isn’t working out so well. Unemployment is rising! Inflation is still high! Growth is shrinking faster than Michael Gove’s grip on reality! [...]
