Nick Clegg is doing the rounds this morning, moving from TV to radio as he tries to sell the government’s latest discovery – social mobility. Seemingly it’s something they found down the back of the sofa and decided to dust off during a difficult media cycle. We’re obviously not convinced.Clegg has also written an article with Iain Duncan Smith in today’s Telegraph stressing the importance of social mobility to the middle classes. It’s not those poor people who need social mobility, it’s you, Telegraph readers. Suddenly this social mobility stuff makes much more sense…
While Clegg is on his morning media tour, he’s also sticking the boot into Andrew Lansley, who looks increasingly isolated. Speaking to LBC this morning, Clegg said, “It would be irresponsible for us as a government to press ahead regardless. That would be reckless.” Is there anyone who hasn’t disowned Lansley’s plans yet?
Elsewhere, over at Political Betting there’s a post about the number of (largely Tory) councillors who have been elected without a contest. Poor show from the other party’s if that’s the case.
