Better off with Ken

March 23, 2012 4:45 pm

On Monday hundreds of people packed the Old Vic Tunnels in Waterloo for a rally to mark the beginning of the official campaign period for the London Mayoral Election. Why they went there is in the end why we in the Labour Party do what we do every day, because Londoners deserve better and the thousands of volunteers on this campaign don’t want to sit on the sidelines, but stand up and fight for change.

Over the last year the Ken campaign has done something unique. We’ve put supporters right at the heart of our campaign. We’ve created a volunteer site to hear and share opinions, allowed people to vote on what our campaign priorities should be, engaged week by week with briefings, socials and events, we even announced our fares policy by text message to people who had signed up.

As a result we’ve had record numbers of people working on this campaign, with hundreds of people at event after event.

At the very heart of all of this is the desire for London and Londoners to be better off and they will be better off under Ken. In the meantime London’s Tory Mayor has championed the slashing of the 50% tax rate for a few Londoners paid for by taxing pensioners, whilst millions suffer his high fares.

Yesterday Ken stepped aboard the “Fare Deal Express” as we take our message to every London Borough over the next 2 weeks.

With the launch of the bus we’ve filmed a new video showcasing why Londoners would be better off under Ken Livingstone. Let me know what you think any time by emailing me at mike_joslin@labour.org.uk

This weekend we want to take our message to the doorstep and are holding a “Fare Deal Weekend”. If you can make it please sign up here -www.kenlivingstone.com/faredealweekend

We’ve done so much this last year and with the countdown clock showing only a small number of days left, I really hope you can do what you can to get a Labour Mayor of London.

PR fluff.  Ken needs to come clean on taxes!

Why does this article not mention Ken’s tax affairs or the antisemitic accusations  ?

Note to campaigners (of all parties) – ignoring vote-costing issues doesn’t make them go away.

I’m afraid Livingstone is a seriously damaged candidate now. And it’s got worse this morning, Jonathan Freedland has come out against him publicly and says he refuses to vote for him …

    The man is a joke.

What on earth is it with Labour producing unelectable leaders and candidates? Brown, Ken and lets be honest Ed (although he’s better than the other two).

Planning the revolution – Labour and the Spending Review

In four weeks time the Chancellor will announce the results of the 2015 spending Review. There won’t be many winners but some will have lost more than others. Political commentators and discussion forums will pass judgement and public sector managers will, yet again, pick through the debris, making do and mending from what ever they can salvage. Before we get overtaken by the detail we should reflect on the bigger picture. What ever the chancellor says on June 26th it [...]

A call for action at the G8

In less than a month’s time, the UK hosts the G8 Summit. With hunger, tax, trade and transparency all on the agenda, the UK has a unique opportunity to show global leadership on these issues. The scale of hunger is devastating. There is enough food in the world for everyone, yet 1 billion people still go hungry. 2.3 million children every year die from malnutrition – to put that in perspective, that is around 16,000 children every day. Or one [...]

A Northern Tory that Labour should be afraid of

The Labour Party spends a great deal of time beating itself up over its performance in Southern England. We know it simply isn’t good enough, but we can’t seem to put our finger on why exactly that’s the case. Is it demographics? No. Culture? Perhaps. Lack of basic party organisation in some areas? It’s certainly a factor. But whilst we’re flagellating ourselves over our inability to perform south of the Watford gap (outside of London), we should remember that the [...]

    Why we love Woolwich

Woolwich is an amazing place. It’s where the Labour party was founded as a mass membership organization. The Woolwich Provident was one of Britain’s first building societies. The Royal Arsenal Coop one of our first cooperative societies. Woolwich had the second Polytechnic in the country, created with the aim of providing education for working adults. Woolwich is my nearest big town centre, where I shop and go to meet friends. In the last few days, for many people, its name [...]
