Core beliefs interesting, still trying to find out what those are, they are obviously not the same as in my day.

    • John Ruddy

Well, since you are quite ignorant about the party in Scotland, let me enlighten you. We passed a motion on public sector pay which is quite different to the line being taken at Westminster.

      • derek

What was that John? because labour led Stirling council has made a pact with the tories to cut council tax, which puts a stop to Stirling introducing a living wage for public sector workers.

        • John Ruddy

Much as I might agree with what was done in Stirling – at least there was local control over what happened. It shouldnt be the position of Government to tell councils what to do.

But a motion was passed at conference. Indeed many were which indidcated a very different outlook to the UK party. But treborc wont know that, and doesnt care.

“The party machine can stifle talent… ” – Johann Lamont.

    That explains a great deal.

I can’t believe that man Joyce can keep his $65 000 a year job when he is evidently not fit for purpose. Last week a teacher in Glasgow hit the press when he was struck off the teacher’s register and dismissed for coming into work drunk and telling his deputy head to f*** off. That’s what happens to people who are not MPs and are proved guilty of misconduct at work. No ifs no buts – you are out the door. Yet Eric Joyce can actually simply refuse to give up his job until it suits him despite gross misconduct and criminal activity.  Labour have known this man is a liability for some time – he’s twice been done with drunk driving and his expenses have twice topped that for elected members  It’s one law for MPs and another for everyone else – no wonder there are demands for more accountability of MPs considering the money they cost the public purse. And I suppose being cynical that anything which avoids the need for a by election is cold comfort for Scottish Labour.

Joyce was at his workplace when he physically  assaulted 4 people. He swore at police and said “You can’t touch me, I am an M.P”, which is doubtless what he and all the others thought when they fiddled their expenses.  On his way being dragged  out he managed to break a glass panel.

If anybody else was arrested at their place of work for drunken, violent, abusive behaviour it would mean instant dismissal. He however has decided he will take 3 years to serve out his notice (I wonder how long it will take him to serve out his community service order?).

Labour have already suspended him, they should now expel him and insist on an election being held in Falkirk. Why should they be served by a man with a criminal record?,and how does he have the nerve to call himself an “honourable member”?.

Why Labour is fighting for the legalisation of Humanist marriages today

Monday saw the first day of Committee on the Same Sex Marriage Bill, where it became clear after a three hour debate on how to distinguish Same Sex Marriage from so called “traditional” marriage that opposition to this bill has not gone away. Despite a huge defeat on Second Reading, opponents reheated and repeated their earlier speeches, in part because their arguments rely on belief and prejudice not evidence or fact. So we sat until 11pm debating conscience clauses, Registrars [...]

Sometimes what is unsaid at PMQs is the most important thing of all…

Well that was a bad PMQs for Ed Miliband – the second in a row. Perhaps he hasn’t gotten back into his stride after such a long period without the weekly Wednesday joust, but whatever it is, Miliband isn’t hitting his marks at PMQs. Meanwhile Cameron – who has been jousting with world leaders this week – seemed far more o top of his game than we’ve been used to seeing him lately. Alas the problem for Miliband was that [...]

Cameron refuses to answer question on secret government plans to hike interest on student loans

Last week it was revealed that the government discussed secret plans to hike interest on pre-existing student loans, meaning that anyone with a student loan will be expected to pay far more than expected. Today, the Prime Minister was asked about this – he spoke for nearly a minute but wouldn’t answer the question. What does he have to hide? How much more does he expect graduates to pay?

Who benefits? Delivering on energy and infrastructure

Across the industrial north, it is striking how old pit villages and industrial towns are proving far less willing to embrace renewable energy than the noisier, more polluting fossil fuels and industries which shaped their identity. Energy companies are getting a nasty shock after mistakenly believing that these communities would not bat an eyelid at a few wind turbines on the surrounding hills because they had been content to make huge slag heaps part of the landscape in decades past.
