    I need to buy a crate of these. This will be the only birthday card I send from now until the end of time.

    {NOT any form of entry for a caption}

    Why would a supermarket sell such a card?  Presumably there must be a market for them.  Are there similar cards of Ed Miliband for Labour supporting recipients?  Do the Clegg cards sell only in the South West (or used to, rather)?  I am completely amazed.

    I have 4 designs for cards on the computer – 2 for boys, 2 for girls, at appropriate ages for my children.  We print one off for each birthday party, and there’s space for hand written messages.  With about 25 children in each of their classes, there are more than enough birthday parties per year to make buying cards a foolish use of money. The presents are more problematic – even at a limit of £5 which does not buy very much exciting, it is still well over £200 a year.

      I saw these for the first time yesterday when picking out a birthday card (no, I didn’t buy this one!), couldn’t believe it either. Not great business sense on Tesco’s part to be seen to wade into partisan politics like this, although strictly speaking their ethos is probably that Cameron is at the end of the day the Prime Minister and de facto head of state of everyone (not that anti-Tory/apolitical customers will neccesarily see it that way).

      • Alexwilliamz

        I thought that was the Queen’s job? Head of state.

        • AlanGiles

          I am surprised, with ever-rising postage costs that one of the big supermarkets haven’t introduced the all-in-one card:

          You could have a picture of a snow laden stable, with a calendar saying January 1st on the wall, together with a Robin sitting on a birthday cake and a donkey toying with an Easter egg

          If we are to have “political” cards, how long before Lord Sainsbury produces for his supermarket a card with Tone and Cherie as Mary and Joseph and David Miliband as the baby Jesus – you can just imagine it “Progress to Xmas” – and for birthdays that photograph of Liam Byrne beloved on Labour List with lit  birthday candles enamating from the most unlikely places – which might go someway to explaining that painful grimace!

    Whitewash report claims that there’s no such thing as DWP “league tables” for sanctions

    Whilst the Westminster village has been working itself up into a lather over the rise of UKIP and when/if there should be an EU referendum, the DWP snuck out a report on the evidence of DWP league tables that we brought you recently. It’s a total whitewash. The report – which you can read here – argues that claims of a league table are entirely down to individual managers at a number of job centres. You could call it the [...]

    Equal Marriage is the most important thing – but Labour can’t let Equal Civil Partnerships get the “long grass” treatment

    So after toying with support for the Tim Loughton amendment over the weekend, Labour has decided to abstain on that particular amendment, and propose their own. Let’s be clear – the most important news today is that Equal Marriage will pass through the commons, and that’s a cause for huge celebration for all but an isolated minority in the Labour Party. I made clear this morning that I didn’t buy the argument that supporting the Loughton amendment would stop or [...]

    Is Ed Miliband picking a fight with Google?

    In his interview with the Observer yesterday, Ed Miliband singled out Google as a company who aren’t “living up to their responsibilities” on tax, saying: ” I don’t think [Google] are living up to their responsibilities at the moment, and I will be very clear about that on Wednesday. It is part of a culture of irresponsibility. If everyone approaches their tax affairs as some of these companies have approached their tax affairs we wouldn’t have a health service, we wouldn’t [...]
