July 5, 2012 3:58 pm

With Alun Michael MP selected as one of Labour’s Police Commissioner candidates, there will be a by-election in his Cardiff South and Penarth seat in November, and the party has now drawn up a shortlist candidates for the selection.

The CLP will meet at 10.30am on Saturday July 14th to choose from the following candidates:

  • Stephen Doughty
  • Kate Groucutt
  • Jeremy Miles
  • Nick Thomas-Symonds
  • Karen Wilkie

We’ll bring you profiles of each of the candidates as soon as we can. If you are one of the candidates – or know them – get in touch.

Brilliant that Jeremy Miles is standing. I hope he takes it. I thought Brian Tomlinson would stand but he hasn’t but I knew that Jeremy Miles was a possibility thinking he’d stand too. Hope he wins.

Really pleased to see that Kate Groucutt is standing. She’s a fantastic campaigner and would be a real asset to the Parliamentary Labour Party. She’s also a real advocate for Wales!

  • John McNally

Kate Groucutt will make a fantastic MP, building on her track record as a campaigner and Councillor as well as her local roots.

So explain to me why the unseemly rush and why a short list is imposed on the constituency. Has Central Party failed to learn from previous attempts to impose candidates

    From another place -

Nick Thomas-Symonds is a lawyer from Toarfen. He was shortlisted in Islwyn last time.

  • Daniel Speight

My usual question. Will anybody declare they are taking Sainsbury money or training?

  • Sam J

As well as being a barrister in south Wales, Nick Thomas-Symonds is also a tutor in politics at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, with a focus on British and US politics. He wrote a biography of Clement Attlee, published a couple of years ago, and narrowly missed out on being selected in Islwyn ahead of the 2010 election. He’d be an fantastic candidate and MP, and I hope that he gets selected.

(Disclaimer: he taught me whilst I was an undergraduate)

I thought the name was familiar. I confess I disliked that biography, for similar reasons to Roy Hattersley: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/jul/31/atlee-life-politics-roy-hattersley

Barrister… tutor at Oxford…  Don’t these people know when to stop? He may feel he has very little to be modest about but doesn’t he accept that the LP should more accurately reflect those who vote for it?

Labour’s future schools policy: why accountability matters

Stephen Twigg, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary is one of the more thoughtful and pragmatic individuals to hold this vitally important brief for some time. To his credit Stephen has been out and about these past two years listening to pupils, teachers, parents and governors and finding out more about the challenges they face on a day-to-day basis. In addition Stephen has been looking closely at some local, regional, national and international programmes that have had a demonstrable impact in raising [...]

Falkirk selection process suspended by the party

The Labour Party have this afternoon suspended the selection process for Falkirk, after concerns were raised about “membership recruitment”. We understand that Ed Miliband was “keen to act swiftly” as the selection process was due to formally begin on Sunday. An officer of the party – yet to be confirmed – will investigate. A Labour spokesperson told us this afternoon: “We have suspended the start of the selection process of the Falkirk parliamentary seat. Concerns have been raised about membership [...]

Working Class MPs – the end of a era?

It is interesting to see that the Labour Party is returning to the vexed issue of its parliamentary selection process. The changes may be well and good.  But maybe we should be asking a bigger question – are we  witnessing the end of working class representation in Parliament? When the Labour Party was first founded it was more simple. Then the explicit  aim was to secure working class representation, and specifically organised labour, in Parliament. Inevitably it became more complicated [...]

An absolutely classic Lib Dem bar chart

Earlier this week we brought you a decidedly dodgy bar chart from the Tories, but it seems that they’re not the only party in Camden adopting dubious use of bar charts. Step forward Camden Lib Dems, with this classic of the dodgy Lib Dem bar chart genre (courtesy of Theo Blackwell). Even by the pretty shoddy standards of the yellows, this is a corker:   Update: Haringey Lib Dems might want to work on their bar charts  maths too (via [...]
