At the Press Gallery Lunch today, Ed Miliband said:

“No hard feelings between me and News International. They want me to lose, I want them in jail”

    Fair comment…

Lol. I do like Ed’s dry sense of humour. For a moment there I thought Blair’s ‘malign’ influence was already taking effect.

  • JoeDM

When a politician says he wants to put newspaper owners in jail then we have a real problem.

    A somewhat Stalinist attitude.

    • Alan Giles

There is a trial pending of senior News International staff, Joe. If they are found guilty of perverting the course of justice, one of the charges, there is a mandatory prison sentence.

      • treborc

Three months in an open prison

    • Peter Barnard

He didn’t say “all” newspaper owners, Mr DM …

      • Peter Barnard

Added : he didn’t actually say “newspaper owners,” either ; he was specifically referring to News International.

Having said that, (i) perhaps it was precipitate of Mr Miliband in expressing a wish that “News International” should be in jail – justice must take its course independent of politicians and anyone else, but (ii) I think there was possibly a bit of tongue-in-cheek with the remark, given the occasion.

  • Brumanuensis

Oh Ed, I do love you. Even if this is certain to be used to nurse a grudge against you by ‘The Sun’ for years to come.

    • treborc

I thought my god Miliband is the problem with the sun, then I realized you mean the news paper.

  • Daniel Speight

Good joke, but if we support the idea of News International being punished by having  some of its senior staff sent to prison, shouldn’t we also demand the same treatment for the man who corruptly changed policy on media ownership so as to suck up to Rupert Murdoch?

Just because you wore a white suit at their kid’s christening on the River Jordan doesn’t make you holy, Tony. A godfather maybe, but certainly not Jesus or John the Baptist. Too much blood on your hands I’m afraid.

Why am I suddenly thinking about Macbeth and his wife, and who would play the three witches? Campbell and Mandelson of course, but who’s the third?

    • Chris

Another Blair obsessive! He is history – not all good but he is history!

      • Daniel Speight

Is he history or is he back? Whichever the baggage remains.

Cameron refuses to answer question on secret government plans to hike interest on student loans

Last week it was revealed that the government discussed secret plans to hike interest on pre-existing student loans, meaning that anyone with a student loan will be expected to pay far more than expected. Today, the Prime Minister was asked about this – he spoke for nearly a minute but wouldn’t answer the question. What does he have to hide? How much more does he expect graduates to pay?

Who benefits? Delivering on energy and infrastructure

Across the industrial north, it is striking how old pit villages and industrial towns are proving far less willing to embrace renewable energy than the noisier, more polluting fossil fuels and industries which shaped their identity. Energy companies are getting a nasty shock after mistakenly believing that these communities would not bat an eyelid at a few wind turbines on the surrounding hills because they had been content to make huge slag heaps part of the landscape in decades past. Wise heads – 5 ex-ministers Miliband could put in the Shadow Cabinet

Last week I highlighted 5 women from the 2010 intake who Ed Miliband could add to his Shadow Cabinet in the coming months. Today I’ve taken a look at five of the wise heads on the backbenches with experience of government who could add something to Miliband’s front bench team in opposition: Alistair Darling – the obvious candidate for a return to the Shadow Cabinet at some point, Alastair Darling managed the remarkable feat of overseeing a financial crisis, and [...]

Why the government are keen to use trade unions as a scapegoat

“Mike Bassett did a better job as bloody England manager than David Cameron has as Prime Minister” Ricky Tomlinson tells me as he pauses for photos with union members at UNISON’s annual conference in Liverpool. Ricky’s just delivered a powerful opening speech to 2,000 UNISON members packed into the Echo Arena. Just like the final scene of his film Mike Bassett: England Manager, Ricky leaves the stage with his clenched fists pumping the air as thunderous applause fills the room. [...]
