A disgruntled cabinet minister? Downing Street briefing against their own? Or both…?

September 9, 2012 11:08 am

What Tory Minister Justine Greening allegedly thinks of her new job:

“I didn’t come into politics to distribute money to people in the Third World”

Her real thoughts? Or Number 10 briefing against their own ministers? Either way, it doesn’t look good for Greening, or Cameron…

Bit weird because I happen to like Justine Greening on a non-partisan basis. I think Cameron and Osborne have really treated her appallingly and if were her, knowing that there’d alot of support from the party and constituents, I’d resign and trigger a leadership challenge.

I don’t agree that they have treated her appallingly. To me it is clear, on a non-partisan basis, that one of Heathrow expansion or new airport needs to happen. It’s clear that the Heathrow option could not be investigated while Justine was transport secretary. She had to go. The question is, why on earth did they appoint her to that role in the first place? It smacks of the Tories clearly not having a clue, and not realising that aviation capacity would be a major issue in this parliament.

I just finished my masters in Global Development last Monday and I wouldn’t hesitate for a second in calling Andrew Mitchell the best Development Secretary we’ve had since Clare Short. He has tremendous credibility in the development community and is principally responsible for the conservative party retaining their commitment to the worlds poorest people.  Justine Greening is not interested in development and from what I can tell has no experience in Foreign policy either. The real story isn’t Greening being moved from Transport to Development to make way for a 3rd runway , they’ve moved a fiscal conservative Thatcherite to Dfid and it’s only a matter of time before they start cutting and reorienting development policy towards security and business interests.

Clare Short of course said “They’ll be wanting golden elephants next” in relation to a plea for aid from I forget which country. So I would be cautious at judging a development sec on the basis of the odd quote!

The chutzpah of Peter Mandelson – and why we need more trade unionists

Lord Mandelson, or Baron Mandelson of Foy, as he should be referred to since he was packed off to the House of Lords by a small cabal, recently accused the Unite union of ‘manipulating selection procedures’ in the Labour Party. He went on to warn Ed Miliband that this ‘stores up danger for a future Labour government’. Irony has always been in as short supply as sheer chutzpah has been plentiful with old Mandy – but since his faithful disciple [...]
