Disorganised Tories can’t even get a resignation right

October 12, 2012 8:54 am

We’re not suggesting that the Tory Party is disorganised, or questioning their competence, but according to the Stratford Herald, they can’t even resign properly:

“Conservative politics in Shipston-on-Stour has entered the world of Catch 22, with a Tory councillor saying he’ll resign when they find someone to replace him – and the local party saying they can’t replace him until he’s resigned.”

Andrew Mitchell may be able to show that councillor how a resignation is done in the next few days…

The Shipston Tories explanation is that they have “no candidate” having previously held the seat. The real reason is that in the election in May, when I was the Labour candidate, the Labour vote went up from 11% to 30% knocking the Tories into a poor third place. Now the Tories recognise that with only a small additional swing Stratford will have its first Labour councillor since 2004 – we can beat the Lib Dems who do not have a local candidate . Following the embarassment of this story and some ill-advised tweeting, the Tory Councillor has now resigned – but one day after the deadline for the by-election to happen on the same day as the Police Commissioner elections. This will cost the Council taxpayer an extra £2,000 appx. No date has been set for the byelection. Please watch this space!

The explanation given by Shipston Tories is that they cannot find a candidate. The real reason is that they fear a Labour win next door to Cameron’s constituency. Last May, when I stood as the Labour candidate, our vote increased from 11% to 30%, knocking the Tories into a poor third place. Now the Tory Councillor has resigned after all following the bad publicity and some ill advised tweeting. However, he has resigned one day late for the elction to fall on the same date as the Police commissioner elections. This delay will cost the Council taxpayer an extra £2,000 appx. No date has been set for the byelection. This time we can beat the Lib Dems and win a seat on Stratford District Council for the first time since 2004. Please watch this space!

Whitewash report claims that there’s no such thing as DWP “league tables” for sanctions

Whilst the Westminster village has been working itself up into a lather over the rise of UKIP and when/if there should be an EU referendum, the DWP snuck out a report on the evidence of DWP league tables that we brought you recently. It’s a total whitewash. The report – which you can read here – argues that claims of a league table are entirely down to individual managers at a number of job centres. You could call it the [...]

Equal Marriage is the most important thing – but Labour can’t let Equal Civil Partnerships get the “long grass” treatment

So after toying with support for the Tim Loughton amendment over the weekend, Labour has decided to abstain on that particular amendment, and propose their own. Let’s be clear – the most important news today is that Equal Marriage will pass through the commons, and that’s a cause for huge celebration for all but an isolated minority in the Labour Party. I made clear this morning that I didn’t buy the argument that supporting the Loughton amendment would stop or [...]

Is Ed Miliband picking a fight with Google?

In his interview with the Observer yesterday, Ed Miliband singled out Google as a company who aren’t “living up to their responsibilities” on tax, saying: ” I don’t think [Google] are living up to their responsibilities at the moment, and I will be very clear about that on Wednesday. It is part of a culture of irresponsibility. If everyone approaches their tax affairs as some of these companies have approached their tax affairs we wouldn’t have a health service, we wouldn’t [...]
