The Lib Dems have started a “fairer tax” campaign (you couldn’t make it up…)

October 17, 2012 9:11 am

The Lib Dems have launched a campaign for “Fairer tax”. In the blurb on their website, they say:

“We believe that everyone should pay their fair share of tax.”

This just a few months after they voted to cut the top rate of tax whilst making cuts that disproportionately hit the poor. As Nick Clegg himself put it back in 2011, a top rate tax cut was not “morally or economically right”.

And neither is campaigning for “fairer taxes” when you’re for anything but…

So what would a fair tax system look like, and would it bring in enough money to run the services we want?

We’ve seen quite a lot recently about the “net contributors” and the “net beneficiaries”, so where should the balance lie? Should we have 20% net contributors or 30% or 50%?

Should this be based on income taxes, expenditure taxes or asset taxes?

Personally I favour a system where income tax and NI are merged, with employers’ NI scrapped. Put the employers contribution onto corporation tax. Start paying income tax at the level of 45 hours minimum wage and move from there. If we are to have different tax bands, then we should base them on people considered to be wealthy. Should a school head of department be in the upper bracket? Should a ward sister?

    What is fair?

Mark it seems you do not have much experience here. This is classic Lib Dem stuff-say one thing do something completely different.

Fairground tax campaign by the LibDems – sounds about right.

The chutzpah of Peter Mandelson – and why we need more trade unionists

Lord Mandelson, or Baron Mandelson of Foy, as he should be referred to since he was packed off to the House of Lords by a small cabal, recently accused the Unite union of ‘manipulating selection procedures’ in the Labour Party. He went on to warn Ed Miliband that this ‘stores up danger for a future Labour government’. Irony has always been in as short supply as sheer chutzpah has been plentiful with old Mandy – but since his faithful disciple [...]
