MacShane must go, say Labour MPs

November 2, 2012 2:36 pm

This afternoon I’ve been contacted by several Labour MPs – including more than one shadow cabinet member – expressing their annoyance that Denis MacShane has not resigned immediately as an MP, despite losing the Labour whip.

So far former Labour colleagues are refraining from going on the record, but a senior Labour MP told me this afternoon that they would be calling publicly for MacShane to go over the weekend if he doesn’t go today.

Watch this space.

I would suspect the reason why he’s delaying the announcement is because he probably doesn’t want to give the BNP any further ammo. Bit of a tricky one really. Of course he should go (Hopefully to prison in time), but at the same time, it would be a huge scalp for the BNP… so perhaps it’s not entirely straightforward.

I think I’m right that if an MP resigns, it has serious consequences for their staff and constituency offices (basically the staff are employed by the MP personally so they are immediately dismissed, and all payment for the constituency office ceases immediately). An immediate resignation might have innocent victims.

An immediate announcement of resignation is another thing. Denis MacShane hasn’t got long to decide because it’s normal for the Leader of the House to table a motion to approve a Standards and Privileges report within a few sitting days – probably Tuesday next week.

It is probably an unconscionable punishment for Rotherham constituency to have it unrepresented for a year. For that reason and the serious failings in the report, I regret that the otherwise magnificent career of Parliamentary service of Denis MacShane must come to an end.

With his lack of contrition for his behaviour I fear MacShane will drag this out. If he is truly sorry about the embarrassment caused to the Labour Party he would have resigned straight away.

I’m not surprised that Mr MacShane’s former Labour colleagues are, at present, staying “off the record,” as a few of them may be reflecting that they got away by the skin of their teeth (“that, but for the grace of God, could have been me”) with the expenses business that we saw in 2009 … not to mention the “cabs for hire” subsequently exposed (Sunday Times? I forget now). I do hope that the £13,000 cheque-waving Hazel Blears MP hasn’t been one of those who have contacted you, Mark …

It’s an inglorious end to the career of a man who – it seemed to me – always tried to be both a good MP, and a good Parliamentarian, especially when “Europe” was being discussed. On R4′s pm programme tonight, there was mention of personal, ie family, tragedy in his life. Although that is no excuse for (it seems) fraud, there appears to be a “hang ‘em high” component in many comments on these “MacShane news” pages, and that’s not a pretty sight. The law will take its course, without any prompting from LL commentators.

Whitewash report claims that there’s no such thing as DWP “league tables” for sanctions

Whilst the Westminster village has been working itself up into a lather over the rise of UKIP and when/if there should be an EU referendum, the DWP snuck out a report on the evidence of DWP league tables that we brought you recently. It’s a total whitewash. The report – which you can read here – argues that claims of a league table are entirely down to individual managers at a number of job centres. You could call it the [...]

Equal Marriage is the most important thing – but Labour can’t let Equal Civil Partnerships get the “long grass” treatment

So after toying with support for the Tim Loughton amendment over the weekend, Labour has decided to abstain on that particular amendment, and propose their own. Let’s be clear – the most important news today is that Equal Marriage will pass through the commons, and that’s a cause for huge celebration for all but an isolated minority in the Labour Party. I made clear this morning that I didn’t buy the argument that supporting the Loughton amendment would stop or [...]

Is Ed Miliband picking a fight with Google?

In his interview with the Observer yesterday, Ed Miliband singled out Google as a company who aren’t “living up to their responsibilities” on tax, saying: ” I don’t think [Google] are living up to their responsibilities at the moment, and I will be very clear about that on Wednesday. It is part of a culture of irresponsibility. If everyone approaches their tax affairs as some of these companies have approached their tax affairs we wouldn’t have a health service, we wouldn’t [...]
