Philip Hammond’s massive Mali cock-up

29th January, 2013 3:38 pm

Speaking in the House today Defence Secretary Philip Hammond was asked a question by Sir Peter Tapsell on Britain’s intervention in Mali, with particular regard to Mali being a Muslim country. In response, Hammond said:

“…Mali is a country with a majority Christian population, with a significant Muslim minority”.

Except he’s totally and utterly wrong – Muslims comprise 90% of the population of Mali (Sunni Islam to be specific). Only 5% of Malians are Christian.

Hammond also stated on more than one occasion the importance of ‘situational awareness’ of our troops (i.e. knowing what’s going on on-the-ground). Sadly, it seems that Hammond and the MOD are lacking “situational awareness” themselves…

It’s great to see that the government are suitably informed about countries that they’re sending hundreds of British military personnel into.

And what a remarkable week Mr Hammond is having…

    Hundreds?

    • Apprently 300 – to begin with. This is Mission Creep.

I read 200, and the majority of those to remain outside Mali itself providing training.

  • I thought Hammond was supposed to be one of the more intelligent Tories.

And what are his civil servants doing? – have they really not given him a country briefing? – or is he just too lazy and arrogant to read one on a place he’s sending squaddies out to die in?

Coming from the war mongering Labour Party who spent their time invading and occupying muslim nations based on lies, it is a little rich.

Leading Labour MPs demand “greedy” Green be stripped of gong over BHS failure

A series of senior Labour MPs have demanded Sir Philip Green be stripped of his knighthood after he was condemned for his “greed” in a damning report on the failure of BHS by two Commons committees. Jon Trickett, John McDonnell and Owen Smith have all called for Green’s honour to be removed after department store BHS – which he sold to the “manifestly unsuitable” Dominic Chappell for £1 last year – collapsed and left 11,000 people without jobs and 20,000 […]

Green’s “failures of corporate governance and greed” at doomed BHS

The recent history of failed department story BHS represents the “unacceptable face of capitalism”, according to a damning report by MPs. Sir Philip Green’s disastrous sale of the chain was the culmination of “greed” and failures of corporate governance, sealing its fate before it was sold to the “incompetent and self-serving” Dominic Chappell and his colleagues, two Commons committees said today.  Green, Chappell and senior colleagues became richer through the “systematic plunder” of the shop’s assets and are all culpable for the […]

Burnham and Rotherham call for Labour officials to extend mayoral selection deadline

Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram have called on Labour HQ to push back the deadline for voting in mayoral selections after delays in issuing ballot papers. The contests, to choose who stands as Labour’s candidates in the metropolitan mayoral elections next year, have been hit by delays in sending out the ballots to members to the 20,000 members eligible to vote.
