Former Labour leader Neil Kinnock has announced he is backing Stella Creasy in the contest to become next deputy leader of the Labour Party.
The news is a boost for Creasy’s campaign, as a Kinnock endorsement still carries considerable weight among Labour Party members. The Walthamstow MP has second most CLP nominations, came second in this week’s YouGov poll, and topped last week’s survey of LabourList readers.
Announcing his support today, Kinnock, who led Labour between 1983 and 1992, said:
“I’ve seen Stella at work and she’s a truly great, fresh, energetic Labour campaigner of the kind that the Party really needs to connect with women and men of all ages and backgrounds across the country.”
