Sadiq Khan has launched a London-wide consultation on the future of policing as he aims to publish a new Police and Crime Plan by April – less than a year after taking office.
Khan, a former civil rights lawyer and shadow justice secretary, and his deputy mayor for policing, Sophie Linden, have released a survey to take people’s views on policing and crime, with a view to having a draft ready for public consultation by Christmas.
The four key areas the crime-fighting duo appear to prioritise are:
- real neighbourhood policing
- keeping young people safe
- tackling violence against women and girls
- hate crime and counter terrorism
These areas are among those Khan pledged to concentrate on before his election to City Hall, promising improve relations between communities and the police, and aim to increase trust in the Metropolitan Police force.

It is not the first time Khan has turned his focus to crime. In July, he pledged £400,000 to tackle knife crime following a year-on-year rise in knife violence in the capital.
Last week, Khan revealed that Amy Lamé would be his new Night Czar, has recently been vocal in his opposition to building a third runway at Heathrow, and also announced a further rollout of the Night Tube.
