In a new YouGov poll carried out for Left Foot Forward, 63% of respondents opposed the renewal of Trident.
40% said that while Britain should retain some form of nuclear deterrent, it should be less powerful and less expensive than Trident, while a further 23% said Britain should give up nuclear weapons altogether.
Only 23% said that the government should renew Trident or replace it with an equally powerful nuclear deterrent.
The poll also shows that the number of people who believe the possession of nuclear weapons makes Britain safer has fallen from 44% when considering the threat of the Cold War to 32% thinking of the threat faced today or in the future.
In a different poll last week 58% of people said that given the state of the country’s finances, the government should scrap Trident.
Campaign group 38 degrees have today launched a petition against Trident, which you can sign here.
