With all votes now counted, Sadiq Khan has comfortably won an unprecedented third term against Tory rival Susan Hall with a notable swing towards Labour.
The final results saw Khan win 1,088,225 votes to Tory rival Susan Hall’s 811,518.
It became clear from the first London Assembly constituency-by-constituency results coming in that Khan was performing significantly better than Labour and Tory sources had been briefing in the run-up to the contest.
The first few constituencies to declare saw a 3.7% swing towards Labour. Khan won the first six declared, before Hall won the next three – narrowly in Ealing and Hillingdon and Brent and Harrow, with only Bexley and Bromley in south London’s suburbs giving Hall a comfortable lead.
The victory comes in spite of Tory electoral changes such as voter ID requirements and a switch to first-past-the-post that some in Labour had feared could cost it the capital’s mayoralty.
London World reports the following constituency-level results:
- Khan received 48.3% of the votes in Merton and Wandsworth, the first to declare, while Hall received 28.6%.
- In Greenwich and Lewisham Mr Khan received 46.5% and Ms Hall 26.2%.
- In the North East Khan received 127,455 compared to Hall’s 34,099.
- In West Central Mr Khan received 54,481 votes and Hall 43,405 votes.
- In the South West Khan won with 77,011 of the votes to Hall’s 68,856 votes.
- In Enfield, Khan gained 82,725 of the votes to Hall’s 41,389.
- In Bexley and Bromley Hall won with 111,216 votes to Khan’s 48,952 votes.
- In Brent and Harrow Hall won with 66,151 votes to Khan’s 58,743.
- In Ealing and Hillingdon Hall won 75,396 votes to Mr Khan’s 73,257.

Khan was first elected in 2016, beating the Conservative Zac Goldsmith. He won re-election more narrowly in 2021, beating Shaun Bailey. Between 2005 and 2016 he was the MP for Tooting, and prior to that a Wandsworth councillor.
Susan Hall has been a London Assembly member since 2017, and previously served as the leader of Harrow council.
As mayor, Khan has introduced universal free school meals for primary students in the capital,and brought in the controversial ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ) charging system to improve London’s air quality.
This proved a key issue in the 2023 Uxbridge by-election, where unhappiness over the charge was featured heavily in a campaign that saw Labour’s Danny Beales narrowly lose to the Conservative Steve Tuckwell. Hall is a firm opponent of ULEZ.
This was the first London mayoral election contested using first past the post. Previous elections used ranked preference. It was also the first where photo ID was mandatory to vote.
Both of these changes came in as a result of 2022 Conservative legislation. Khan has condemned the legislation as “major changes to the voting system brought in by the Tory government to make it more likely their candidate will win”.
