Labour’s reasoned amendment to the welfare bill failed to pass tonight by 208 votes to 308 votes. The party line was then to abstain on the bill’s vote – but 48 MPs (including leadership candidate Jeremy Corbyn, and London Mayor candidates Diane Abbott, Sadiq Khan and David Lammy), defied the whip to vote against it anyway.
