Labour MP Bayo Alaba suspended over allegations around Covid loan

Southend East and Rochford MP Bayo Alaba has been suspended from the Labour Party amid an investigation.

LabourList understands that Alaba, elected in 2024, referred himself to the party for an investigation and agreed to be administratively suspended while the process takes place.

The Times reports that the investigation concerns allegations that Alaba tried to avoid repaying a taxpayer-funded Covid loan.

A Labour Party spokesperson said: “Bayo Alaba MP has referred himself to the Labour Party so that these matters can be investigated in line with the party’s rules.

“The Labour Party expects the highest standards from our elected representatives and we have robust processes in place to ensure those high standards are upheld.

“We cannot comment further while the investigation is ongoing.”

Bayo Alaba has been approached for comment.
