In a statement this evening, Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said:
“Across the country we have seen great respect, compassion and unity shown in tribute to Drummer Rigby’s life and in respect for his family.”
“Through that brutal attack Islamist extremists tried to divide us. But instead people have responded with mountains of flowers in Woolwich, donations to Help For Heroes, tributes to the bravery of the women who tried to help a fallen soldier, and disarming humanity from residents who prevented a march against a York mosque.”
“It is only the BNP and the EDL, with their ignorance and hatred, who want to walk all over the country’s compassion and cause division. I hope this extremist minority heed the message of Drummer Rigby’s family. Matching hatred with more hatred and racism is the wrong way to respond to the loss of a young man’s life.”
“Because of the BNP and EDL, police officers in London at a time when they are still arresting suspects in the Woolwich attack may have to also prevent extremist marches turning into violence. I urge them not to march, to respect the country’s united response, and allow the police to get on with what’s important, getting justice for Drummer Rigby and keeping our communities safe.”
