LabourList readers back Miliband on banks – but want more from the Minimum Wage

The results of our first weekly LabourList poll are in – and they send a clear message to Ed Miliband and the Shadow Cabinet.

First up – the good news for Miliband is that readers of this site back his plans, announced in a speech on Friday, to break up the banks and bring more competition to the high street. 83% of those who voted in our weekly survey said that they supported Miliband’s plans, with only 8% of readers saying they thought Miliband’s approach had been the wrong one.

Is Ed Miliband right to advocate breaking up the banks?

However, with George Osborne suggesting (but not committing himself) that a rise in the Minimum Wage to £7 an hour might be in order, LabourList readers are equally clear on how they think Labour should respond. A whopping 87% of our readers said that the Minimum Wage should match the Living Wage (£7.65+) with only 1% saying that the current rate was correct, and 12% suggesting that £7 per hour was the right figure.

Whilst Miliband and Balls have talked repeatedly about “strengthening” the Minimum Wage – and did so well before Osborne became a last-minute convert last week – neither have been willing to say that the Living Wage should be the legal minimum. LabourList readers very clearly beg to differ…

665 LabourList readers took part in the first of our weekly survey between Friday and Sunday. Thanks to everyone who took part – the next survey will be up on the site this Friday afternoon. It’s your party – have your say.
