Assisted dying: How does each Labour MP plan to vote on revived bill?

MPs are preparing to vote on a renewed attempt to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales, in a division likely to go down to the wire.

Labour MP for Rochester and Strood Lauren Edwards has introduced identical legislation to Kim Leadbeater’s assisted dying bill to Parliament, after the Spen Valley MP’s proposed law was killed off in the House of Lords due to an unprecedented number of amendments.

The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill would allow people over the age of 18 to be given help to end their life if they were expected to die within six months, subject to certain conditions and safeguards.

MPs narrowly voted in favour of Leadbeater’s bill in June last year, approving the bill by a majority of 23 at third reading – down from 55 at second reading. Among Labour MPs, 224 voted in favour, compared to 160 against.

The subject has divided MPs across the house rather than by party lines, with a free vote once again expected on the bill.

Ahead of the vote on September 11, Labourist are compiling a list of how Labour’s MPs intend to vote on the bill. We will add to this list as the debate gets closer and as more MPs signal whether they will back or oppose the bill.

Currently, 13 Labour MPs have confirmed they will back Edwards’ bill, 20 Labour MPs have confirmed they will vote against, with two – including Prime Minister Andy Burnham – announcing they will not vote.

Based on their vote last year, more than 200 other Labour MPs are likely to vote in favour of the bill, with 140 others likely to vote against when second reading takes place next week.
