Cameron finally admits the truth – Vote Tory, get “permanent” austerity

So it turns out David Cameron lied to the electorate, and over something pretty big too. It won’t be on the front pages on the papers – even though it’s a pretty huge whopping lie – and it’ll largely be overlooked by the chattering classes – even though it’s on the biggest issue of the day, the economy.

You see this is what David Cameron said three years ago:

“I didn’t come into politics to make cuts. Neither did Nick Clegg. But in the end politics is about national interest, not personal political agendas. We’re tackling the deficit because we have to – not out of some ideological zeal.”

And this is what he said last night:

“We are sticking to the task. But that doesn’t just mean making difficult decisions on public spending. It also means something more profound. It means building a leaner, more efficient state. We need to do more with less. Not just now, but permanently.”

And we all know what those “efficiencies” look like – taking money from the disabled and kicking them out of their homes, cutting benefits across the board – for the old, for the sick, for the infirm, for those who can’t find work and for young mothers. Closing down public services and slashing funding to local government, public public servants out of work and driving down wages so that Britain can win the global race (to the bottom). All in the pursuit of a state that is smaller – the Randians have taken over the asylum.

The Guardian described Cameron’s shift as a “change of tack” but it’s much more than that. It’s a u-turn, a change in raison d’être, a volte-face. It turns out austerity has been the plan the whole time. Permanent austerity. He’s never going to reverse those cuts. He never had any intention of doing so. He DID come into politics to make cuts. This IS about ideological zeal.

So now the public know the choice at the next election – Vote Tory, get “permanent” austerity. The Labour leadership’s mission is to provide something better than that – it should not be beyond their wit…
