A new poll out today has the following topline numbers for the three major parties at a general election:
Conservatives 36% (-5)
Labour 24% (+3)
Liberal Democrats 19% (+4)
Mike Smithson if Political Betting has said the new poll results look like “a serious blow for the Tories following nine terrible days for Labour”.
Meanwhile there was further potential good news for Labour as the Times, who carried out the poll, said that in separate numbers:
“Faced by a straight choice, 44 per cent would still prefer a Labour government and 42 per cent a Conservative one. This is despite 72 per cent dissatisfaction with Labour.”
Anthony Wells at UK Polling Report said:
“This is rather surprising – in recent years we’ve normally seen a boost for the victors following the local elections, a ‘winner’s aura effect’, and certainly disunity of the sort Labour have suffered in the last week has normally damaged a party.“
32% of people now think the economy will do well over the next year, with 63% thinking it will do badly, an improved set numbers from the last such poll.
Evidently, the public are not entirely sold on David Cameron’s Conservatives and there is much still to play for.
The full poll results will be published in the Times tomorrow.
