Only six have come forward, can’t we just stick them all on the ballot?

I’m finding it hard at the moment to justify this nomination process. We all know the worth of having all six in the race. We all know the value of having the broad debate. We all know the point of having them each articulating the views a large group within the Party. So can’t we just stick them all on the ballot and be done with it?

First, I think it’s worth noting that we haven’t had everyone and their dog come forward and I completely agree with the PLP nomination process in principle – agreeing that each should have a threshold of support is fundamental. This time, though, we are agreed we want the broadest possible debate, so let’s have it.

Second, let’s not let the big boys make the PLP nomination process a popularity contest. We know the two that will get a huge amount of support, so why let them make nominations a joke? Why should the party pay for them to make headlines?

Third, if any of the six don’t get on the ballot, a large group within the party won’t be happy and will even feel cheated – even if they weren’t planning on voting for them. Let’s be honest, a lot of people just want to see all six names, regardless of whether they were planning on giving them a high preference.

Fourth, we should have all six out and about around the country, not arm wrestling in Westminster. What does it say about Labour to the voters when the first thing each of the candidates has to do is arrange a whole load of meetings behind a large fence with armed security?

We need them all on the ballot. What do you say?
