The Telegraph has another great scoop tonight. After their secret recording of Vince Cable yesterday (albeit undone somewhat by omitting the attack on Murdoch), they’ve recorded three more Lib Dem ministers attacking the government. Perhaps most significantly, business minister Ed Davy suggests that housing benefit changes are going to leave some people “below the breadline”:
Steve Webb (a welfare minister) revealed that he had written to the Chancellor over cutting child benefit for higher-rate tax payers, and Scottish Secretary Michael Moore said that his decision to back tuition fee rises was the “worst crime a politician can commit, the reason most folk distrust us as a breed”.
It remains to be seen whether or not these three ministers will face the same punishment as Vince Cable. That seems unlikely as they are much less well known names (and don’t appear to have broken any ministerial code), but this will heap further embarrassment on the coalition.
At this rate Nick Clegg in particular will be desperate for the Christmas break.
