Len McCluskey says “opt-in” for trade unionists won’t work

Writing for the Guardian before Miliband’s plans to alter the Labour/union link were announced, Unite General Secretary Len McCluskey said:

“Switching to an “opt-in” for the political levy wouldn’t work – it would require Labour to unite with the Tories to change the law, would debilitate unions’ ability to speak for our members and would further undermine unions’ status as voluntary, and self-governing, organisations.”

None of the Trade Unions have spoken out publicly about Miliband’s plans yet – we’ll bring your their reaction when they do.
