Ed Miliband’s ratings shaky but he’s still seen as most down-to-earth party leader

Ed Miliband’s popularity has slumped amongst Labour members, an Ipsos Mori poll published this evening has revealed. Over half of Labour supporters (52%) are unhappy with Ed’s performance, whilst 40% are happy with it. Among the general public, 60% of adults polled have said they are dissatisfied with the Labour leader, whilst 24% are satisfied. Ipsos Mori staff suggest that these findings from the general public put Ed’s popularity in real danger.

But things aren’t as bad as the Ipsos Mori poll initially suggests. Electoral Calculator, the UK’s top electoral predictor, predicts Labour will have a 5.5% lead over the Conservatives in 2015 and suggests a Labour majority in the election is still 76% likely. The Ipsos Mori poll revealed the general public believe Ed Miliband is the most down-to-earth of the three main leaders, with Cameron and Clegg getting named as more “out-of-touch” than Miliband. Labour has also maintained its lead over the Conservatives by three points, regardless of Ed Miliband’s personal dip in popularity. The Ipsos Mori poll puts Labour on 37% and the Tories on 34%. A lead of just three points is too close for comfort, so the Labour shadow cabinet will need to up their game in the coming months to boost their popularity among the general public.
