Lib Dems reveal Hung Parliament plans – in bizarre Buzzfeed post…

The Lib Dems have been understandably coy about what they might do if there were an unprecedented second successive hung parliament. One assumption might be that the yellows would stick to what they did last time – supporting the largest party – although assuming that the current Lib Dem leaderships will be consistent is a questionable judgement. And then there’s the small matter of what “largest party” means – is that seats or voteshare?

But some small shred of clarity has been provided by the Lib Dem Press Office today, who are punting around a rather embarrassing and bizarre Buzzfeed community post today, called – don’t laugh – “10 Reasons You Will Fall Back In Love With Nick Clegg At The Next General Election”.

Most of it is a mixture of self-delusion, irrelevance and even chutzpah (point 1 includes a picture of their manifesto – parody is dead). However point 5 – which is otherwise a fairly standard history re-writing attack on Labour – includes this sentence:

“If Labour is the largest party in a hung parliament the Lib Dems would help ensure the government maintained sensible economic policies that keep the deficit under control.”

Anyone got any idea what that means? Does it mean the Lib Dems would force deeper cuts on Labour as the price of coalition? Does it mean the Lib Dems would slope off with the Tories even if Labour were the largest party? And what do they mean by “sensible”? Your guess is as good as ours, but that’s their line and they’re sticking to it. Whatever it is…
