Ten days ago, Ed Balls announced that a Labour government would raise the top rate of tax to 50%. Meanwhile, George Osborne and David Cameron have refused to deny that the Tories have plans to cut the top rate of tax to 40%. With that in mind, our latest weekly survey asked LabourList readers what level they would prefer to see the top rate of tax set at.
Ed Balls will be pleased to see that the 50% rate was the most popular selection, with 49% of you agreeing with Labour policy on the top rate of tax.
However a significant percentage of LabourList readers (40%) want to see the top rate of income tax raised further, with 13% holding out for a top rate of tax higher than 60%. Meanwhile, 7% of you want to see the top rate of tax stay at its current level, whilst 4% want to see it cut further, to 40% or lower.
775 people took part in our weekly survey which was conduced between February 1st and February 3rd. Thanks to everyone who took part. The next weekly survey will be out on Friday.
