Scottish Labour’s “idea bigger than independence”

Last weekend, Scottish Labour met in Perth for one of their most important conferences in decades. In Scotland the conference received a significant amount of coverage – as you’d expect ahead of the independence referendum in September. But elsewhere in the UK the coverage was limited, which means that many may have missed Scottish labour’s big announcement at conference – their “Red Paper” – a document contrasting the narrow independence based vision of the SNP what Scottish Labour hope will be acknowledged as a much broader vision.

The key messages from the document are:

  • We have no limit in our ambition for Scotland and we want no Scot to have a limit in theirs.
  • That’s why we believe in an idea bigger than independence – the pooling and sharing of resources across the UK for the benefit of everyone in the UK.
  • Labour is the party of Devolution and we believe that we get the best of both worlds with a strong Scottish Parliament, secure within the United Kingdom.
  • We will build a new moral economy, where the national wealth is used for the benefit of all.
  • That together we will bring about the bold, 21st century, revolution in social policy that Scotland needs.

together we can

Alongside the launch, a campaign video was released outlig Scottish Labour’s vision for Scotland – you can watch it below, and read the “Red paper” here:
