Labour to force Commons vote on banning tenancy fees

Labour are set to force a vote in the House of Commons next week on whether estate agents should be banned from charging tenancy fees. Currently, renters are charged but those buying a house are not.

The policy was announced last Thursday as part of Miliband’s planned reforms for the housing rental sector, and forcing a vote is part of the Party’s plan to highlight “Zombie Parliament” – the name given to the Government’s lack of a legislative agenda as we head into the last year before the election.

It will be tabled as an amendment to the Consumer Rights Bill on Tuesday.

Now the question is whether the Lib Dems and the Tories will dare to vote against the popular proposal, or suffer the humiliation of following Miliband’s lead. LabourList will have the latest as it unfolds.
