This morning the official Twitter account of the Department for Education tweeted that it wants schools to teach a broad curriculum “based on British” – but apparently that doesn’t include rights for gay people:
The Secretary of State for Education, Tory MP Nicky Morgan, voted against equal marriage, although said this week that she now supports the legislation. And let’s not forget that David Cameron voted against the repeal of Section 28.
UPDATE: Shadow Education Secretary Tristram Hunt has responded:
“Nicky Morgan clearly does not believe that LGBT rights are British values. They are. Compulsory sex and relationship education, including LGBT rights, in all schools is common sense, not nonsense.
“Nicky Morgan should apologise for the offence that has been caused by claiming that it is nonsense for all schools to teach gay rights.”
