The campaign is well underway. With just under two weeks to go until election day and Labour and the Tories level-pegging in the polls, we wanted to know how LabourList readers rate Labour’s campaign since parliament was dissolved.
There’s a real air of optimism – 78% of people think the campaign is either good (51%) or very good (27%). Meanwhile 18% say ok.
An extremely small 4% think it’s either poor (3%) or very poor (1%). This all suggests readers think Labour need to keep doing what they’re doing up until election day.
Good 51%, Very good 27%, Okay 18%, Poor 3%, Very poor 1%, Don’t know 0.3%
Having said all of that, it still looks like neither Labour or the Conservatives are set to win a majority. That’s why we wanted to know, in the event of a hung parliament, which outcome readers would prefer.
No surprises that at 56% a majority would prefer a minority government. The prospect of a coalition with the two parties that could win enough seats to anchor a Labour government – the Lib Dems and the SNP – isn’t too appealing to readers. However, 23% would rather an SNP coalition over one with the Lib Dems 14%. And 6% don’t know.
Finally, for our rolling question: how do you think Ed Miliband is performing as Labour leader?
As with the campaign, the results are increasingly good. Last time we surveyed on this question, 24% said very good and 40% said good – but there has been a real turnaround in recent weeks. Now, almost half judge Miliband’s leadership as very good, while four in ten say it has been good. Only a tenth of readers say his leadership has been okay (half of what it was last month) and fewer than 5% believe his leadership has been poor or very poor.
There has been a steady rise in Miliband’s personal polling over recent months, and his recent assured media performances have started to dispel the belief that he will be a major drag on Labour’s chances. The biggest shift in the way people judge his leadership, however, is that with less than two weeks to go, he is now widely considered favourite to become the prime minister.
Very good 47%, Good 38%, Okay 10%, Poor 2%, Very poor 2%
920 people voted in this week’s survey. Thankyou to everyone who took part.
