Liz Kendall has criticised the Government’s record on women in the workplace, as evidence shows 300,000 more women than men are out of work.
The Trade Unions Congress and the Office for National Statistics have today released figures that show nearly 300,000 more women than men are not in work. This suggests that there is a gender gap in terms of new jobs that have been created.
This research shows that 4,103,000 people ‘want work’ – this is people who are unemployed and those who are economically inactive and looking for work. Of these 2,194,000 are women while 1,910,000 are men.
The leadership candidate has said the government has understated its employment figures with regards to the number of women looking for work and that it is “further evidence of how this Tory government is letting women down”.
She notes that “not only have the cuts already made disproportionately left women worse off but now Cameron and Osborne are also failing to provide jobs to women who are actively looking for work.”
Kendall, who has recently spoken out about the sexism women face, has said: “We need to see more action to positively help women into the workplace that means ending discrimination, improving childcare and supporting a high-wage economy to create more jobs”
