Not in London for the start of the Olympic year, watching the fireworks like millions of other Londoners, that’s for sure . Instead, he’ll be spending New Year at a “luxury Italian ski resort”.
Deputy Chair of the Labour Party Tom Watson reacted to the news, saying:
“It’s a shame on one of the biggest nights for Londoners the Mayor of London can’t even be bothered to put in an appearance to his own New Years Eve event.”
“Where on earth is the Mayor? London has had Boxing Day tube strikes, a spate of violent incidents including a fatal stabbing in Oxford Street and now the New Year’s Eve celebrations, the Mayor has been silent throughout. He promised to tackle knife crime, yet the latest police figures show it has rocketed by 13% in past year on his watch. Boris Johnson is mistaken if he thinks hiding away will cut crime and make our streets safer.”
“Will Boris Johnson even be back in time for January 3rd when his above inflation bus, tube and rail fares come in? It’s time for the Mayor to stop hiding away and do the job he was elected to do.”
