Yes Ken Again

March 8, 2012 9:24 am

In recent days the Boris Johnson campaign have produced a “Not Ken Again” poster with a fairly predictable set of attacks on the Labour candidate. In response, Livingstone’s team have produced this:

A spokesperson for the Ken campaign told LabourList:

“Over the last few days we’ve been inundated here at Labour HQ with phonecalls and emails from members of the public complaining about Boris Johnson’s advertising campaign. It is the latest in a long line of negative smear tactics from Johnson’s Campaign Director, Lynton Crosby. They are terrified of the movement we’ve created behind Ken’s Fare Deal. So we thought we’d add a little bit of reality and honesty to the poster! Hope you like it.”

I dread the mayoral elections – we constantly have this ridiculous “Ken and Boris” Punch & Judy show which generates more heat than light.

It is a waste of time and money – especially the Green, Independents and other candidates, including Labour and Conservative who just seem to have roles as “extras”.

the danger for both K & B is that the public will just get sick to death of this  otiose playground-like behaviour and if it is raining on May 3rd people just won’t bother to turn out.

All going swimmingly for Mr Livingstone, with the New Statesman firmly behind him: http://www.newstatesman.com/uk-politics/2012/03/income-tax-mayor-livingstone

    Up to a point!

    • AnotherOldBoy

I should ahve added taht among the broken promises referred to on the Not Ken Again poster are Mr Livingstone’s promises on fares in 2000 and 2004.

      • John Reid

On the Not Ken again Poster, there’s A March 2008 quote from the Evening Standard, saying “Ken breaks his promise on not cutting Police”, Ironical seeing as Ken was Just about to increase Police in 2008 and Boris said he wouldn’t cut police, then Boris did cut thwm by 3,000,

Mehdi Hasan is to be congratulated for his honesty on the Ken tax scandal.

Mehdi argues (as have I)  that the only way out of this for Ken is to “do a Hazel” and write a cheque to HMRC in front of the TV cameras.

Hasan continues: …his allies just don’t get it…they are in total denial.”

This is issue is not going away.  Those who continue to support an orchestrated cover-up are providing more-and-more ammunition to Team Boris.

Problem is the “Fares Cut” cannot be delivered without an investment cut of £3bn.

    What will go Ken?

“Over the last few days we’ve been inundated here at Labour HQ

    Boris Johnson’s advertising campaign”

How many calls exactly has Labour HQ had from “members of the public” complaining?

  • KonradBaxter

“a fairly predictable set of attacks on the Labour candidate”

If it refers to his apparent hypocrisy, then these attacks should also come from the Left.

“Over the last few days we’ve been inundated here at Labour HQ

Boris Johnson’s advertising campaign.”Why am I struggling to belive this?

  • AnotherOldBoy

I don’t think that they have had a call from Jonathan Roberts, Labour’s candidate at Thirsk and Malton at the last election: http://labour-uncut.co.uk/2012/03/08/an-open-letter-to-ken-livingstone/

    • Winston_from_the_Ministry

       Ouch.

  • Marga

I only see that Ken enemies inside the party are helping Boris

  • AlanGiles

The problem is Marga that it is hard to swallow somebody saying in terms that nobody who avoids paying tax should be in Parliament, when the person saying it seems to think it is OK for him to do it himself. That is the textbook definition of hypocrisy.

I suppose he would say he is not in Parliament, but when you wish to attain high office of any sort you have to be like Ceasers wife: I really cannot understand why in order to save a little money they probably don’t need anyway, anyone is prepared to  tarnish their reputation.

    Why was my
8 March posting (below) on Livingstone playing along with the Iranian Islamic Republic’s Press
    TV censored?

    An example
of Ken Livingstone happily playing along with the appalling Iranian Islamic
Republic mouthpiece Press TV, 27 March 2011:

    Press TV
interviewed Former Mayor of London, Ken
    Livingstone regarding pro-American and pro-Zionist neo-conservative politicians
    in the UK and England’s
    dire financial crisis.

Livingstone: We have always had this problem as
many of the politicians in Britain
seem to have their primary loyalty to the United
States of America, and often taking a very strong line on
the question of Israel and Palestine. They are not
actually putting the interests of the British people first.

“The money is paid to Silveta, of which he is a director and Beal is secretary and director.
Livingstone said he employed a researcher, a press officer and his wife [Beal] who typed his memoirs.”

Mmm… it sounds a bit like the “Betsygate” defence to me,  TBH

Selections roundup – including the No.1 seat on Labour’s target seat list, and a double-header in Brighton

There were a number of Labour PPCs selected over the weekend as the selection process for 2015 continues to heat up. There were two selections on the same day in Brighton, one in Warrington – and the candidate for Labour’s No.1 target seat was selected. North Warwickshire and Bedworth – the party’s No.1 target seat chose their PPC on Saturday, and former MP Mike O’Brien was (re)selected on Saturday to try and reclaim the seat for Labour. He lost out in [...]

Say No to the recall of MPs!

I have been surprised by the extent of media and other support, including editorially by the Guardian, for the proposal now espoused by the government for a given percentage of an MP’s constituents to be allowed to ‘recall’ him or her between elections, either ending his political career or forcing him to vacate his seat and stand for re-election in a by-election. This whole idea seems to me misconceived.  Fear of de-selection already makes too many MPs slaves of their [...]

There’s much to welcome from Stephen Twigg’s speech – but many questions too. What do you want to ask him?

There’s much to welcome from Stephen Twigg’s major speech on schools today. Some will doubtless dwell on the news that Labour has no plans to close pre-existing free schools, but this isn’t a new policy – it’s one Twigg made clear was Labour’s policy when I interviewed him last year and one he reiterated a few months later. I’d rather focus on his announcement that there will be no more Free Schools under a Labour government (which some have hilariously try [...]

“It’s not over until it’s over” – Waheed Alli and the fight for Equal Marriage

Waheed Alli doesn’t strike me as someone who leaves things to chance. Being successful in politics, finance and the media doesn’t come by chance. And neither does winning a vote in the Lords on Equal Marriage. Over the past fifteen years (since he became a peer aged just 34 – making him the then youngest peer in parliament – in 1998) Alli has been closely involved with many important pieces of Equality legislation. In particular, he is credited with spearheading [...]

We are the party of work. Labour – the clue is in the name

Last week the facts were laid out for all to see.  Across the piece this Conservative led-Government has failed to address unemployment, tackle child poverty or improve the living standards of hard working Britons. Just over three years into this jaded Government, it is not a record to be proud of. Here are the facts. Child poverty is on the rise.  Government policies have pushed an extra 300,000 children into absolute poverty.  Progress in tackling relative child poverty has completely [...]
