The Evening Standard are confirming this afternoon that “Hague is new Tory No 2, putting Osborne in shade”.
Ben Brogan of the Daily Mail explains what’s going on:
“The Cameron love thing with Mr Hague undermines Mr Osborne in two ways. First, by annointing the Shadow Foreign Secretary as his deputy in all but name (so why not give him the title then?) he ends the Cameron/Osborne duopoly that until now has ruled the party. Suddenly there are three in this marriage. It may be necessary, it may be successful, but it can only be seen as a dilution of the Osborne influence. Second, and more telling to my mind, is the expansion of Mr Hague’s role to cover the general election. He hasn’t been put in charge of the campaign, but his new duties are nevertheless an incursion into Mr Osborne’s territory and will be exploited by those who whisper that the Shadow Chancellor has struggled because he has too much on his plate.”
