267 people went home happy last night. And deservedly so. Yesterday they did a good thing and it shouldn’t be forgotten. Hats off to the 27 Labour MPs who exhibited backbone on the Gurkhas. These 27 MPs made a difficult political decision. Last night was a 21 point win for morality.
The government should be thoroughly ashamed of its position regarding the issue of Ghurkha residency in the United Kingdom. Denying people, who laid down their lives for this country, the right to reside here is morally and ideologically bankrupt, politically suicidal and damn right indecent.
What do the Labour leadership think they’ll achieve by taking this position? Disillusionment and anger? Job done.
Does the leadership not realise that it has a responsibility not only to govern, but also a duty to represent party members? I wonder how much support there is amongst Labour members and activists across the United Kingdom for this position. Not much I suspect. Not only have the government failed the Ghurkhas, they have failed us as party members. I don’t want to be associated with such a repugnant policy. The government represents the Labour Party and they shouldn’t forget it.
I questioned my membership of the Labour Party. The Labour Party has been accused of many things in the past. Being nasty wasn’t one of them.
Well, slowly but surely the leadership is doing its level best to open us up to this. The cabinet should take a step back and take a long hard look in the mirror, before they disgrace the party further. Swallow some pride, apologise, admit you were wrong or resign.
