The Guardian has a fascinating article about the shadow culture secretary’s call to freeze the TV licence fee last week, which it says was a “hugely symbolic” statement of intent and would signal a move toward deeper cuts should the Tories return to power next year.
Sir Michael Lyons, the chairman of the BBC Trust, was reportedly furious at Mr Hunt’s statement, describing Tory proposals as a “recipe for curbing the editorial independence of the BBC”.
The article notes that relations between the BBC and the Tories – who have long argued that the corporation has an unfair funding advantage over commercial broadcasters – have often been strained, particularly in the Thatcher years, when the constant threat of privatisation hung over Broadcasting House.
