According to WalesOnline, First Minister Rhodri Morgan has written to the Electoral Commission in support of the campaign to save general election night, warning that ending the Thursday night counts would be a “bad mistake” which could damage democracy.
Morgan said:
“I’m just absolutely gobsmacked by the Electoral Commission’s approach…The sooner people know what the result is the better, because they feel there is a connection between how they voted the previous day and what the result was. It just gives you the feeling your voting counted.”
He continued:
“The last thing we want in a democracy is a disconnect… I just think it’s a very adverse move.”
Mr Morgan’s opposition is echoed by the leaders of Plaid Cymru and the Welsh Liberal Democrats.
