Sir Alex and Willie Bain: United for Glasgow

Sir Alex Ferguson has today declared his support for Willie Bain in the Glasgow North East by-election. His endorsement appears in a newsletter being distributed by Labour activists to almost 40,000 homes in the constituency.

In the newsletter, Fergie – who is a freeman of the city of Glasgow and whose team plays Chelsea later today – says:

“I’m backing Willie Bain and I urge people to vote Labour in this by-election. I’ve supported Labour all my life and think the country is a better place for it for the Party being in power.

Glasgow is my home city and every time I come back I see the changes for the better since 1997. It’s a world away from when I was a young apprentice. But some things stay the same. Like the need for a strong local voice to speak for the city.

I always tell young players that being a footballer is the best job in the world. Yes, it’s hard work to reach the top but nothing to bringing up a family or running a household on a tight budget.

I started out life as a shop steward at Remington Rand so I know the difference a strong, genuine voice can make. Willie Bain won’t let you down. He deserves your support too.”

Willie Bain reacted to the endorsement with delight:

“Sir Alex knows a thing or two about running a good campaign so I am delighted that he is backing us in the election. I know people here respect him. He’s a tough manager and has first-class judgement.”

Willie is 10/3-on to win the by-election on Thursday. You can read his PPC Profile, and get involved in his campaign here.
