What Gordon should say to bailed out banks

BanksBy Alex Smith / @alexsmith1982

The Prime Minister has been fairly clear in saying “at the end of the day, banks will be paying money to the British public, not the other way round.”

But on the day that JP Morgan Chase announced new multi-billion dollar profits and bonuses, Gordon Brown would do well to consider making as strong a statement on his position with the British banks as I’ve just received in my email inbox from President Obama and Joe Biden [bold in original]:

“My commitment is to recover every single dime the American people are owed. And my determination to achieve this goal is only heightened when I see reports of massive profits and obscene bonuses at some of the very firms who owe their continued existence to the American people…We want our money back, and we’re going to get it.”

Obama’s supporters are being asked to sign up to an online campaign statement saying:

“We want our money back — and we stand with President Obama to make sure we get it.”

People power, they say.
