DAVID MILIBAND today set out his message for party reform, pledging to train 1,000 community organisers “in the skills they need to turn their passion for changing their community into action”.
He said:
“I want the Labour Party to pioneer a new approach to politics. We have to rebuild the Labour movement — in our radical organising tradition.â€
And later, in an email to supporters, Miliband said:
“In the 1980s the leadership was ashamed of some of the party members. In the 1990s the party leadership built structures to control the party. In 2010 the party membership achieved some amazing results – but our party leadership failed to support them.
“Our members saved us from a 1983 style wipeout in terms of seats — seats like Birmingham Edgbaston which I visited last night would have been lost without an amazing army of members and supporters who stoop up to be counted.
And we must build on this – reconnecting our Party back to its people, building change from the grassroots up.”
David Miliband’s calls for an elected Labour Party chair are thought to be a move to appeal to Jon Cruddas, who may be interested in such a role.
And in an AudioBoo from today’s speech venue, Miliband talked further about how he wants to convey “the buzz in the room into action”:

After ED BALLS’ interview in the Times this morning, the former schools secretary seems to have been having a more domestic day. He tweeted his recipe for lasagne to followers:
“Well…. RT @Divene: @edballsmp and your recipe for lasagne is…..?
Dice onion, carrot, 4 garlic cloves and fry in olive oil; add mince and brown; add can plum tomatos, half tube tomato puree…
Then add half tube tomato puree, stock (I use chicken), salt and pepper and good tablespoon or oregano… Simmer for 35 mins as it thickens…
Meanwhile make a roux – not too think – good point and a half of milk and add cheese (cheddar and parmesan) after its boiled and cooled some…
Then layer in dish – meat-pasta-ch sauce-meat-pasta- ch sauce and cook for 40 mins at gas mark 5 … Its good…”
Balls will appear on the BBC’s Politics Show tomorrow.
Jane Merrick of the Independent has tweeted today that although Jon Cruddas has nominated DIANE ABBOTT to ensure a broad contest, “he is likely to support David Miliband in the proper run off”.
ANDY BURNHAM is thought to be continuing to work the Parliamentary Labour Party this weekend. Burnham is still 12 nominations short of being on the ballot, with just 4 days to go before nominations close.
JOHN MCDONNELL is also likely to be calling supporters in the PLP, trying to secure the nominations he needs to be on the ballot. McDonnell needs 22 of the remaining 76 MPs yet to nominate.
ED MILIBAND was at his own CLP in Doncaster last night. He is also now preparing for hustings, which begin on Monday.
