Ed Miliband has ramped up the pressure on the Lib Dems to vote against tuition fee hikes, reminding them that they pledged to vote against – and pointing out that abstaining would still be breaking their promise to students. In an interview with Sky News, Miliband said:
“My message to Lib Dem MPs is that they made a clear promise at the general election, the only way they can fulfil that promise is by voting down these changes. Abstention is the same as voting for these changes and letting them through, and they will pay a heavy price at the next election.”
“Frankly the Liberal Democrats don’t have a leg to stand on. They’ve scheduled this vote today, they’re breaking their promises, they shouldn’t be doing so.”
