Labour areas hardest hit by seat reduction

By Mark Ferguson / @markfergusonuk

As the Boundary Commission begin their two year review ahead of planned seat reductions, it looks increasingly likely that Labour will be disproportionately hit in England, as well as huge cuts in Scotland and Wales.

Estimates released by the boundary commission – and published by Politics Home – show that Labour strongholds such as the North East, North West and West Midlands are in line for the biggest cuts in the number of seats. Lib Dem and Tory dominated Southern and Eastern regions are much less affected.

The estimated cuts by region are:

North West England: 75 down to 68.
West Midlands: 59 down to 54
North East: 29 down to 26
London: 73 down to 68
Yorkshire and the Humber: 54 down to 50
East Midlands: 46 down to 44
South West: 55 down to 53
South East: 84 down to 81
Eastern England: 58 down to 56

Labour will also bear the brunt of cuts in Scotland 59 down to 52 and Wales 40 down to 30. Regional breakdowns for Scotland and Wales are not yet available.
