Yesterday we told you that Gordon Brown might be in line for the top job at the IMF. Today he’s being linked with another role at the World Economic Forum (WEF), but as the Indie reports this morning, that might just be a stepping stone to the job that Brown really wants at the IMF.
It may not be that simple though for the former PM. George Osborne (who has always been obsessed with Brown) could veto any appointment. The IMF story was initially in the Mail yesterday, as is today’s veto threat. Far be it from us to suggest that the chancellor might have planted a story, and a promise of a veto, as a way of gaining a bit of backbench popularity. He’s surely not that shallow or petty…
And Michael Meacher has “demanded an official investigation into Downing Street’s approval of a controversial nuclear fuel plant at Sellafield in Cumbria” according to today’s Independent. Meacher claims that he was given an ultimatum to sign a deal on the plant by Blair’s then chief of staff Jonathan Powell. Meacher clearly has some real concerns about the process behind the approval, however, he was the minister responsible…
