Wolverhampton Liberal Democrats are facing embarrassment – and calls for an election to be re-run – after the wife of their leader was caught removing a Labour leaflet from a letterbox and replacing it with one of her own. Labour candidate Gurcharan Bedi went on to lose the ward, Spring Vale, by 41 votes.
A video of the incident has been posted online, with the title “Liberal Democrats stealing my post”:
Speaking to the Wolverhampton Express and Star, Mr Bedi said:
“I was a first-time candidate and I went and knocked on every single door in the ward. The reaction I had was brilliant and I felt 99 per cent sure I was going to win. This news is really disappointing and I wonder if it has had an effect on the overall result.”
It is believed that the local Labour Party are liaising with the regional office to see if any further action can be taken.
