A quite remarkable statement today from Tory AM Tony Arbour – picked up by the excellent Adam Bienkov:
“It is a fact is it not that relatively few Londoners use London transport in any way? Most people don’t use London transport with any sense of regularity.”
Last year there were over 1.1 Billion journeys taken on the tube alone. I’m willing to accept that there were a few tourist journeys in that number, but arguing that “relatively few Londoners use London transport in any way” is patently ludicrous. No wonder the Tories believe that saving £3.10 on council tax is more important than saving £250 on transport fares. Interesting to see Tory AM Brian Coleman – a man we’ve heard from several times before – “hear hear”-ing Arbour’s statement. I’m certain I’m not the only one of his constituents in Barnet and Camden who regularly uses public transport…
Alas, like Coleman, Arbour is no stranger to controversy, as Bienkov notes:
“He previously caused controversy when he described council housing as “housing for the riff raff.””
