Labour’s biggest affiliate Unite confirmed today that there will be a General Secretary election over the coming months – as has been anticipated since December. Two candidates have declared themselves to be standing for election – and received the necessary number of nominations – Jerry Hicks and Len McCluskey.
10 days ago we told you the unverified number of nominations received by each candidate – now the final totals have been confirmed by the union.
Nominations by Unite branches and workplaces closed last week and have now been validated to confirm:
- 136 nominations for Jerry Hicks (118 branches; 18 workplaces)
- 1089 nominations for Len McCluskey (926 branches; 163 workplaces)
Voting papers will be dispatched to Unite’s 1.46 million members from March 18th, with the ballot closing on Friday 12th April. The result will be declared on Monday April 15th.
