Are the Tories planning to veto money for UK foodbanks?

As we already know, the use of foodbanks has risen sharply in recent years, and yet the Tories remain reticent to talk about it.

But would they actually dare to veto funding for those same foodbanks? That seems to be the case.

A vote in the European Parliament tomorrow to provide a cash boost for UK foodbanks is threatened with a UK Conservative veto, Labour’s MEPs have warned. Labour’s MEPs will back calls tomorrow to increase the £2 billion EU-wide fund to tackle food deprivation, yet Tory MEPs plan to oppose the aid, arguing that national governments, not Europe, should provide the aid.

That’s blatant hypocrisy though, as the government aren’t pledging to spend money on foodbanks.

It’s 2013, and people are starving in the UK. The Tory response? Veto money for foodbanks…
